Harimander Sahib is of utmost importance and significance since centuries besides being the most famous Sikh Temple or Gurudwara open for all people of all religions across the globe. It is also called the Golden Temple in English because of the gold plating that covers most of its surface. This Gurdwara is found in the holy city of Amritsar in Punjab in North West India and is the sacred and the most visited of the many historic Sikhs shrines found in India and Pakistan.
The origin and evolution of the place where the Golden Temple now stands is covered in mystery. Some sources trace its origin from the pre-historic era as an Indian place of worship. The location of the Golden Temple is a low lying area with a big pond surrounded by dense jungle. This piece of land was shred by Sultanwind Tung, Gilwali and Gumtala etc. villages. More over its geographical location was superb. It was next to the city of Lahore, the then capital of Punjab and the highway connecting India and Central Asian countries was also running through this piece of land.
Many other Sikh centers exist in India but the Gurdwara Complex of Golden Temple is World famous and has become very popular among the followers as well as tourists as a place of pilgrimage and enlightenment. The establishment of Sri Harimandir Sahib during the late 1500 was a most significant achievement of the Sikh Gurus as a centre of bliss, serenity, inspiration, faith and love for the whole mankind.
